Some of the state's best skaters and BMX riders will be on show at the recently completed Mount Eliza Skate Park on Saturday May 26 for a leg of the 2012 South Eastern League Series. The official opening of the skate park will be held in conjunction with this event.
The Skate Park, at Emil Madsen Reserve in Wooralla Drive, was completed last week by the builders Convic, several weeks ahead of schedule. Further works by the Shire will continue in coming weeks including landscaping treatments, seating and other amenity works in the area of the Skate Park.
Mount Eliza Ward Councillor Leigh Eustace said the Skate Park was already proving very popular with skaters, BMX and scooter riders.
"I dropped down to the Park on Saturday, the day after it was completed, and there were skaters and riders everywhere," he said.
"The feedback from people visiting the park and has been very positive. People are just amazed with the extent of the facility that the Shire has provided for skaters and riders; both young and old.
"I know it's been a long time in the making, but we've ended up with a fantastic facility that I'm sure will be very popular with skaters and riders of all ages and abilities."
Councillor Eustace said the Mount Eliza Skate Park was one of the most challenging layouts in the region.
"This Skate Park is a combination of a two-level bowl and a street circuit and is probably the most advanced on the peninsula. It's certainly creating a buzz among skaters and riders, not only on the peninsula, but from neighbouring areas as well," he said.
Councillor Eustace is now working on the creation of a form of "Friends Group" to provide for the ongoing maintenance and support for the users of the Skate Park.
"The South Eastern League Series will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase this wonderful new Skate Park, and for our locals to get to see some of the best skaters and riders from the region in action up close."
